Heads Up, Odoo Enterprise Users! Your license cost might change from April 2026

For a long time, Odoo Enterprise support has focused on the three most recent versions. While regular upgrades bring fantastic new features and improvements (who doesn't love a fresh, modern interface?), many of you have asked for more flexibility and longer-term support. Well, Odoo SA has listened!

Odoo Enterprise support now covers all versions of Odoo, with no deprecations! This is a game-changer, no matter how you look at this. Whether you're running the very latest release or an older version, they're claiming you'll continue to receive essential assistance, bug fixes, upgrades, and vital security updates.

We are exceptionally interested to see how this is going to play out. What is the definition of having support? Odoo SA have historically shied away from backporting fixes in many cases. Does this mean that we'll see a flurry of patches to previously EOL versions of Odoo?

As you might expect, there is a cost here. Even if you're already on a multi-year agreement Odoo SA are imposing an additional 25% fee - annually, for legacy systems. Odoo SA have explained that this is the only way to ensure that this new offering, that you cannot opt in or out of, is sustainable.

What's a "legacy system"?

Anything 4+ years old.

Odoo 19 releases in September 2026. Making the demarcation point 15 or prior when this kicks in.

Who's impacted (and who isn't)

  • Odoo Online customers: Great news – you won't be impacted! Your system is automatically updated every few months or annually, so you're always on a recent version.
  • Odoo.sh and On-Premise customers: If you're on a version 4+ years old, then you're facing the additional charge.  However, Odoo.sh is officially extending its supported versions to the five latest major releases, which is fantastic for those of you on that platform.

Odoo SA estimate that this will impact 10% of customers.

When does this start?

To ensure everyone has ample time to plan, Odoo has confirmed that these charges won't apply before April 2026. This gives you plenty of time to consider your options and plan your next steps.

How we feel about this

Mixed feelings. On one hand a genuinely positive development from Odoo, offering more choice and security for your business.

However, the way this was announced was less than stellar. It leaked a day early causing several customers and ourselves to reach out to Account Managers at Odoo SA to be given little information. I'd like to see external communication improved here.

There is also an argument that Odoo SA are trying to wiggle out of their 7% renewal increase limit. Odoo SA's counter argument is that this is a new service offering.

Want to talk about your upgrade?

While it's fantastic that Odoo is now offering extended support for older versions, it's crucial to remember that upgrading your Odoo system is a significant project that takes time and careful planning. This isn't something you'll want to leave until the last minute.

Thorough testing is an absolutely essential part of any successful upgrade. It ensures all your customisations, integrations, and unique business processes work perfectly with the new version. Rushing this phase can lead to unexpected issues down the line, potentially disrupting your operations.

With the new legacy fee not applying until April 2026, you have a window of opportunity to decide on the best path forward for your business. Whether you choose to upgrade to a newer version or opt for the extended support on your current system, proactive planning is key to a smooth transition.
